Using NVIVO to Review Papers for the Jet Study

Background

Recording the research process has moved away from the tradtional lab notebook and much more use is mdae of blogging style approaches. There is a collection of online resources used for documenting the research process for examples see the references [1], [2], [12] and [3] below.

However, recording the provenance of different datasets, used, generated and accessed throughout the project can be challenging particularly ensuring that we are working with the correct data set versions.

We want to use the NVIVO software to

  1. Manage the literature review
  2. Manage and track the data sets

Method

An initial collection of references for this project has been identified through Harvard ADS at reference 12 (below) these references could be imported into Endnote (ref. 5). There are two jobs we need to complete using NVivo

  1. Download the papers as pdf’s and link to them using NVIVO
  2. import the endnote publication archive into nvivo

With the papers imported into NVIVO a number of qualitative research possibilities are open textual processing, tagging, annotation and coding.

Coding requires care and before emabarking on this check some of the material linked below [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] ‘11]

A useful lapproach is a mind map representation of our documents as illustrated below

picll

Constructing the mindmap and colouring it appropriately. The NVIVO window is shown below

  1. Use the mand map to create a set of codes
  2. Open a paper and select sections of text also open the coding menu to select an appropriate code to code that section to picnvivo

This procedure is repeated for all the papers this is an iterative process part of which include the annotation of relevant sections of the document.
